I think we’ve laid a lot of groundwork to include LGBT characters, now it just comes down to confirming them, and making them visible in the games they appear in. What does this mean? Well none of these characters are really confirmed to be gay, often the opposite, but I think these characters definitely represent places where it wouldn’t have seemed ‘pushy’ to make a character gay, where it would have been totally acceptable, and may have gone unnoticed for them to be gay, where it may have even been better for them to be that way, because their representation would be noticeable without ‘pushing it in our faces’ as others like to say. Some other popular characters who get thrown under the “gay bus” so to speak on the internet are Luigi (Odd right? With a spin off character no less), Daniel and Alexander from Amnesia the Dark Descent, Barret from Final Fantasy, and others, such as Link from Zelda from time to time (it’s the Tunic). Certain members of this large cast are definitely closer to each other than others, so it’s not a stretch.Īny of you familiar with Kingdom Hearts as a franchise will probably recognize Axel and Roxas, and perhaps even Sora and Riku, because their subtext is just astoundingly in your face.

Let’s start with everyone in the Touhou series, which is a series of scrolling shooters from japan, boasting an entirely female cast, who have interesting quirks throughout them. By this I mean characters who have not been confirmed either way, but who a large number of the fandom suspects are not necessarily straight. We could talk about some unspoken LGBT characters, so let’s do that. I think we’re making steps forward though, especially with Indie games gaining a foothold, however even then it gets too convoluted to tell sometimes, and Indie doesn’t have as much influence as other portions of the industry.įor my last post, I’m honestly quite unsure of what to write about, if you couldn’t tell. How long will it be before these things get normalized in mainstream AAA games? We may never know. It wasn’t always easy, and some would argue still isn’t easy, to find female characters in the industry, characters who aren’t white, but also aren’t background characters are also hard to find.
I think this is true for a lot of people. So how do we conclude all of our research so far? Well, the largest thing I’ve learned is that while there are a lot of examples of LGBT+ characters in the industry… or y’know, a few, you have to dig for them, and even then you may not like what you find. If you guys feel like keeping tabs, I might make more if inspiration strikes, but I dunno, nothing is for certain, and nothing is written in stone, however if I ever make those videos those will get posted here for sure. So this is it huh? The last passion blog… at least for this semester.
